Where can you dispose of asbestos in New Zealand, and what does it cost?

Can you take asbestos to the tip?

Only to a tip that is authorised for it, and only on its terms. Asbestos waste must go to a disposal site that is allowed to accept it; most council transfer stations are not, and several that used to be have stopped. The sites that do accept it treat it as a special or managed load: separate hours, a booking or application, wrapping rules and a per-tonne rate well above ordinary rubbish.

If a licensed removalist does the job, disposal is part of their work and should be on the quote as its own line. This page is for the case where the waste is already bagged and you need to know where it can go and what it will cost.

What does asbestos disposal cost per tonne in New Zealand?

These are the published charges we could read on the operators' and councils' own pages on 29 September 2026. Where a site accepts asbestos but does not publish a price, we say so rather than guess.

• Christchurch — Metro Place EcoDrop (EcoCentral): $732.49 per tonne, minimum charge $58.60. Accepted Monday to Friday, 8am–12pm and 1pm–4pm, at Metro Place only, wrapped to EcoCentral's acceptance criteria.
• Nelson Tasman — York Valley landfill (NTRLBU): managed loads, including asbestos, $431.25 per tonne including GST ($375 excluding) for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. The general minimum load charge is $115.
• Auckland — Redvale, Whitford and Hampton Downs landfills: accept asbestos; the council's transfer stations do not. The landfills are privately operated and quote their special-waste rates directly.
• Wellington — Southern Landfill: takes asbestos on a written application, lodged Monday to Friday 8am–4pm. The rate sits on Wellington City Council's landfill charges schedule.
• Kāpiti Coast: asbestos is no longer accepted at Otaihanga Landfill or the Ōtaki Transfer Station; the council names Spicer Landfill in Porirua as the closest that takes it.

A tonne is more asbestos than most home jobs produce. A few sheets of fibre-cement cladding or a small area of vinyl is often under the minimum charge, which is why the minimum, not the per-tonne rate, is usually the number that matters for a homeowner.

How does asbestos have to be wrapped for disposal?

Double-wrapped in heavy plastic, sealed, and labelled, so nothing can break open between your site and the tip face. Christchurch's EcoDrop asks for material to be securely double-wrapped in 250-micron polythene and to meet its written acceptance criteria. Other sites publish their own versions; check them before you load the trailer, because a load that arrives unwrapped can be turned away.

1. Find out which site near you accepts asbestos, and whether it needs a booking or an application.
2. Ask for its acceptance criteria in writing and wrap to them.
3. Keep the load covered and separate from any other rubbish.
4. Keep the weighbridge docket: it is your record that the waste went where it should.

Should you dispose of asbestos yourself?

If you paid someone to remove it, disposal is their job and their licence covers how it is done. If you are a homeowner who removed a small amount of non-friable material from your own home, the regulations bind businesses rather than you, but WorkSafe still advises against doing it yourself.
