Asbestos testing cost in New Zealand, and how a test works

Why can't I take the sample myself?

Only a laboratory can tell you whether a material contains asbestos. WorkSafe tells homeowners that sampling should only be done by a reputable contractor, and tells PCBUs that it should only be done by a competent person. That is why a surveyor takes our samples and why we do not sell DIY sampling kits.

You will find DIY sampling kits for sale in New Zealand. We don't sell one, and we won't: taking a sample means disturbing the exact material you are worried about, and WorkSafe's guidance is that a competent person should do it. The cost difference between a kit and a proper visit is smaller than people expect once you count the second sample most jobs need.

What happens when you book an asbestos test?

You book online and pay $249including GST, we arrange a surveyor visit within 2 working days, the surveyor takes and seals the sample, an IANZ-accredited laboratory analyses it (reg 11), and we send you the laboratory's own report with a plain-English note on what it means. Step by step:

1. You book online and tell us the address, the material, where it is and whether it is damaged. You pay $249 including GST for one sample.
2. We arrange a visit within 2 working days of the booking, with a surveyor we have under subcontract in your region.
3. The surveyor takes the sample — wetted down, sealed and put in a labelled bag — and notes the condition and approximate extent of the material. If more samples are needed they ask you on site first, at $85 each.
4. An IANZ-accredited laboratory analyses it. If a PCBU arranges for a sample to be analysed, the analysis must be done by a laboratory accredited for that work — in New Zealand that means an IANZ-accredited laboratory (or NATA in Australia).
5. We send you the report— the laboratory's own document, unedited — plus a plain-English note on what it means and what your options are.

What does an asbestos test cost in New Zealand?

A visit and first sample runs $195–300 across the New Zealand providers we checked on 30 October 2026; ours is $249 including GST, with extra samples at $85. Every figure below was read off the provider's own page that day, and where a provider quotes GST-exclusive prices we show the GST-inclusive equivalent in brackets.

We don't sell laboratory-only analysis, where you post in a sample you took yourself. Fibresafe publish $60 for that, and it is a legitimate service for someone competent to sample. It isn't what we do.

Worked example: one, two and four samples

The first-sample price is only half the story, because most jobs need more than one. A bathroom is usually two (the wall sheet and the floor); a kitchen and bathroom together is often four. Here is what that costs at each provider's published rates, GST included:

The totals are the first-sample price plus the published extra-sample price for each additional one. Asbestos Safe Consultancy prices exclude GST, so their column is $220 plus about $75 a sample, with 15% added. The kit row is the cheapest because no one comes to the house: you take the samples.

How much is a DIY asbestos test kit in NZ, and is it worth it?

A DIY asbestos sampling kit costs from $115 in New Zealand, including one laboratory analysis. Property Risk NZ publishes $115 with one sample and $70 for each extra, GST included, against $195–300 for a surveyor visit and first sample. The saving is real, but you take the sample, which means breaking off the material you are worried about.

WorkSafe's advice is that sampling should be done by a reputable, competent contractor. The same kit seller quotes $300–980 for a surveyor to test at home, from $315. On one sample the kit saves $80–185; on four samples, $60–260 against the visits above. A kit also gives you no note on extent and condition, which is what decides the licence class if the result is positive.

How much does an asbestos survey or clearance cost compared with a test?

A test answers one material. When the question is a whole building, or proving an area is clear after removal, the price is a survey or a clearance, and those start higher. Asbestos Safe Consultancy publishes these on its own price page (checked 15 September 2026):

Most homeowners about to drill, cut or remove one thing need the test, not the survey. Pulling out a kitchen, a bathroom and the ceilings in one go is where a refurbishment survey becomes better value than paying per sample. On a removal job, CheckMyBuilder puts testing or survey work at $100–1,500 on top of the removal cost.

What changes the cost of an asbestos test?

• How many samples. The first sample carries the visit; each extra one at the same visit is $60–95 across the providers above. A bathroom often needs two: the wall sheet and the floor.
• Turnaround. Fibresafe publishes an urgent laboratory rate of $100 a sample against $60 standard.
• GST. Some providers quote GST-exclusive prices. Add 15% before comparing.
• Who takes the sample. Lab-only analysis of a sample you post in is cheaper, but WorkSafe says sampling should be done by a competent person.

How long does an asbestos test take?

The sampling visit itself is usually short, and the laboratory result follows within one or two working days. New Zealand laboratories publish turnarounds of within 24 hours (Asbestos & Biological) and 1–2 working days (Fibresafe, with an urgent rate of $100 a sample). We arrange the visit within 2 working days of booking, so from booking to report is typically under a working week.

How do you read an asbestos test result?

A laboratory report says what was found in the sample submitted. It does not say your house is "asbestos-free", and no honest report ever will: it speaks for the material sampled, at the point it was sampled. That is why the surveyor's note about extent and condition matters as much as the yes or no.

If the answer is no, you carry on with your work and keep the report with the property file. If the answer is yes, the next question is not "how bad is it" but is it friable, and how much of it is there — because that decides who is legally allowed to remove it. What happens if the test is positive?

Ask us for a removal quote and we come back with one fixed written price. It names the WorkSafe-licensed remover doing the work, their licence class and number, who is doing the independent clearance, and what is included. Your $249 test fee is credited against a removal we arrange within 90 days.
