NZ Asbestos Removal

Class M · Non-notifiable

Minor works (under 10 m²)

Non-friable, under ten square metres — unlicensed-permitted, but rarely worth DIY.

The regulation in plain English

The 2016 regulations permit owners or competent persons to remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos without holding a licence, provided appropriate PPE, RPE, decontamination and disposal are followed. In practice, the cost difference versus a Class B operator is rarely worth the risk — and the disposal docket alone proves the work was done lawfully.

What's included

  • Single sheet, panel, vinyl tile or eaves replacement
  • Suitable RPE (P2/P3) and disposable PPE
  • Wetting agent / encapsulant during removal
  • Double-bagged, labelled disposal at licensed facility
  • Decontamination of work area before re-occupancy

What's not included

  • No air monitoring or clearance certificate (not required, not issued)
  • No WorkSafe notification required
  • Not recommended for owner-DIY; engage a Class B licensee
